HEINZ Commercial Contest

Steve was about 2 minutes away from joining NASA when Luke told him that he wanted to enter the Heinz commercial contest.  Three minutes later, Steve left NASA and began storyboarding a red world of ketchupy motion graphics.

They began with casting and shooting a few extras in front of our green screen at DreamWorld Studios. Since everyone is silhouetted in the commercial, you might not recognize them. Steve is the lucky swimmer and surfer, his girlfriend Heather cooks out on the grill, Luke flies a plane, and I think Joe Don Baker was eating a finger or hotdog, or something.

The next step was to design the look and feel of the commercial with sketches, Illustrator and Photoshop. Luke began drawing the tomatoes one by one and Steve got busy building his very own submarine.  After all that fun, they began tedious hours of animation, compositing and rendering in After Effects (but we won’t bore you with those details).  Finally, Steve captured a rare red whale and Luke composed some music and sound effects for the commercial.

All in all, Steve and Luke are really proud of the world of Heinz they created. And Heinz was too, as they chose this commercial in the top 11 of their contest*, (unfortunately, they only posted the top 10). Please give it 5 stars on youtube if you like it (or if you love it)! Thanks for viewing!
